Lean x Six Sigma = Results

How To Assemble A Winning Team!

Characteristics of Chaotic Teams

Rush headlong into tasks without thinking of process

Unclear objectives

Assume everyone knows the objectives

Inadequate planning

Leader's role unclear

Ideas voiced but not listened to or developed - high level of overspeaking/interrupting - tendency for selfish and undisciplined communication

Success patchy

Tend to explain away failure

Fun - for a short while

Characteristics of Formal Teams

Likely to over-react - become too formal in procedures and roles

Strong leadership often seems answer to problems of chaotic stage - leader often criticised for failure to be strong enough during chaotic stage

Formal/specific roles during formal stage (time keeper/secretary etc)

Poor flexibility

Do not make use of capabilities of members

Characteristics of Mature Teams

More flexible with procedures - can break rules without slipping back into chaos

Flexible roles - members can act according to nature of task and contribution they can make

Leader less directive

Everyone shares responsibilities

Relaxed, co-operative atmosphere

Everyone involved/contributes according to their strengths/abilities

Members understand and trust each other

Good listening - ideas listened to and developed

Members not frightened to contribute - no ridicule for failure

Synergy

1  +  1  =  3

Individuals working together in a team will produce more

than the sum of individuals working alone

Teamworking

Leaders              . People who co-ordinate the activities of others, including the review process.  They clarify goals and promote decision making, motivate and encourage the team to achieve, listen to members' opinions and check that they have been understood by everyone

Doers                  . Very action orientated, like to achieve tasks, very concerned about achieving objectives, they contribute drive and energy to the team

Thinkers             . Carefully think through problems and ideas.  They are typically very analytical and will usually enjoy planning and problem solving

Carers                 . Very interested in developing a good 'team spirit'.  They are sensitive to peoples' feelings and morale, and will work to ease tensions and develop good relationships

Why - Why?

Why

     did the machine stop?

because the fuse blew due to an overload

Why

     was there an overload?

because the bearing lubrication was inadequate

6 sigma training

Why

     was the lubrication inadequate?

Because the lubrication pump was not working properly

Why

Wasn't the lubrication pump working properly?

Because the pump axle was worn out

Why

     Was it worn out?

     Because sludge got in

By repeating 'why' five times, it is possible to identify the root cause of the problem, and hence the real solution attaching a strainer to the lubrication pump.  Not doing this could have resulted with simply replacing the fuse

Problem Solving: -

  Who is having the problem?

Why are you doing things this way?

  Where is the problem happening?

  What is going wrong?

  When is the problem occurring?

How is it happening this way?

Planning: -

Who is going to do what?

  Why is that necessary?

  Where do you start?

What do you have to achieve?

When do you need to be finished?

How can you achieve the objective?
